Landing in the 80s

It’s been one of those months. Just when we think we’re safe, plotting a course back towards Earth, things get a bit wobbly!

Here in the Comet, we were discussing which UK supermarkets were doing the best to reduce plastic waste. Sainsbury’s stores now have these reusable bags for when you’re buying loose fruit and veg, and Tesco has just committed to reducing millions of tonnes of plastic from its stores! It’s wonderful to see these changes, but we do need to do more. We were online, signing up to Break Free from Plastic (website here) and following them on Instagram and Hugo was spinning a drumstick around his fingers, like drummers do. Suddenly, the stick flew out of his hand and re-calibrated the controls. We lurched to the right, straight towards a vortex hidden behind an asteroid belt. Crashing through the thick fog of rock, and with a flash of white-hot light, we’re somewhere else. It looks the same, but the reading on our instruments says this is 1984… and we’re descending towards Earth’s atmosphere.

So now we’re lost in the 80s. Not the first time for MJ, who is over 30. But he was a toddler last time around, and that’s more excusable cos when you’re a toddler you’re not responsible for your geographic location.

The Comet finally comes down in a park somewhere in Whitechapel, east London, where a bunch of high school graduates were having their senior prom and invited us to come and play. We played our set, including our new cover song, Fashion (by one of our inspirers, David Bowie) and then there was more music from Dreampark, and the crowning of the Prom King and Queen!

What an amazing night! Thanks if you came! We’ll be doing it again, if we can ever find the codes needed to get back to 1984; one of the best years for music, despite what James Acaster says! We can prove it, too - listen to the Prom 84 Playlist!

Next we need to work out how to get to November 2019, hopefully near Milan for our gigs on 29/30th after London on the 16th!
